Post Malone's Twelve Carat Toothache

What’s up guys, I got into Post Malone recently and I saw that his new album “Twelve Carat Toothache” came out and I figured I’d give it a quick listen so leggo.

The intro track, “Reputation” is a really nice and solemn song that talks about Post reflecting on his life and figuring out what his life choices were and what were moments in his life that were meant to be. The second track “Cooped Up” was a nice song that kind of showcases the hip-hop side of Post Malone, and it’s this duo of singing styles from these two songs that we see repeated in the project. That isn’t a bad thing because the two sides that I see from Post each have their pros and cons and create a lot of good songs that are notable from his previous projects. “Lemon Tree” has some nice synthesizers and a nice beat that does take a good amount of time to get there, but definitely shows some value towards the end of the track. I liked “Wrapped Around Your Finger”, definitely gives me a summer vibe which is great given how we’re in the month of June right now. “I Like You” was a cool track that has a sweet feature from Doja Cat, and “Wasting Angels” has a nice feature from the Kid LAROI. From this project, I gotta say if there’s one thing that Post did right for sure, it was picking the features for his songs because I don’t think I heard an annoying or misplaced feature at any point in this project. I personally really liked the song “Love/Hate Letter to Alcohol” as it’s a very loud and powerful song that shows the relationship Post has with alcohol. The chorus of this song definitely makes me hum a bit and is overall a great song that I think could’ve gained more appreciation had it been moved to the beginning or end of the project instead of having it cluttered in the middle.

The other two songs that I enjoyed were “Waiting for Never” and “Hateful”, though they were only part of the DELUXE part of the album. First off, I definitely want to comment on this because I definitely don’t think that adding two more songs to an album necessarily creates a ‘deluxe’ version of the project. For me, I’ve always thought of the deluxe feature of the album be an opportunity for artists to either release side B’s to tracks that wouldn’t have been heard before or throwaway songs to just drop for fans or even a new group of songs that further the themes explored in the core project. In this case, I kind of got the feeling that Post just decided to throw two more songs in the mix to gain the sales that could come from releasing a deluxe version of the project a couple days after the core album dropped. I know it’s a marketing tactic commonly used in the music world currently, but man I just didn’t like how this went about. The worst part is that these two additional songs were pretty good, making me wish that these tracks replaced some of the snoozers on the tracklist.

I know from previous stuff I’ve seen that Post Malone talked about him having really bad writer’s block before making this album and used his experiences of isolation in his studio by himself to help him get inspiration for making this project. I can tell that he had fun making this project, but I think that there wasn’t anything substantial about this project besides a couple songs that may get your head moving occasionally. The tracks seem to be a bit scrambled and it’s honestly hard to keep the name of a memorable song in your head after going through the fourteen songs that can sound a bit repetitive and bland at moments. Definitely feel like giving this album a 5.5/10, but you know what, I’ll be generous and give a 5.6 for the DELUXE version of the album since those two tracks made me feel sorta better. Hope you guys enjoyed this quick review and I’ll catch you guys later!!
