Logic's Bobby Tarantino III

What is up everyone, I hope you all are doing great and doing good things. Happy August, and what a better way to start this month off than with Logic’s new addition to the Bobby Tarantino mixtapes, Bobby Tarantino III. I don’t know if you all know this by now, but I am/was/idek fan of Logic the rapper. I think he has created a lot of projects that have grown upon the essential parts of what made projects like Kid Cudi’s “Man on the Moon” series stand out. He is, however, coming off as a little lost right now as he’s jumping in and out of retirement to make music or do other things, but when he’s in the zone, the man can do wonders. That being said, let’s look at this project and see what there is to say about it.

Having this be the third installment to the Bobby Tarantino series, I will definitely start off by saying I’m critiquing this a bit harsher than usual as I did with his other projects. The cover art of this project is amazing and does a great job at telling a small story that is in the Bobby Tarantino tapes. We are given 12 songs, and tldf version: Skip the first 6 songs and you’re golden. We start off with the track “introll” which is pretty much Logic showing off his jokes as he trolls the listeners into thinking he’s gonna start a song but never does. It’s kiiiiinda funny but to me personally, this was a waste of an intro. The other intros in the other Bobby Tarantino projects were amazing. “illuminatro” was a very ominous yet heartfelt beginning to the first tape as Logic creates a reversed memo of him saying that he loves his fans and he’s grateful for the success his second album “The Incredible True Story” created. The second tape has Rick and Morty introducing Logic as they bicker over what project to listen to in their spaceship. Both are awesome, but here its just him being “OH YEAH, UHHHH OH YEAH, ALRIGHT LETS DO IT WHOO”. Isn’t my style. The next song, “Vaccine” is a pretty confident track with an aggressive beat that allows Logic to rap about how he’s doing during the pandemic and how he’s lethal and addicting like COVID-19. “Get Up” comes next and it’s honestly not my cup of tea but I do have a lil soft spot for the chorus as we have a slower song about not giving up and chasing what you want. “My Way” is the fourth track and um.. I don’t know, the beat is nice but I feel like the lyrics are a little too ehhh and the autotune just makes it a bit awkward. “Call Me” is just a miss I am sorry. I like the idea that Logic is trying to create a slower flow that deals with romance and love, but it’s definitely a work in progress. The first half of the mixtape is a work in progress. There’s some nice sounds, but it doesn’t come off as anything ‘complete’.

The second half though is better. “Inside” with Cynthia Erivo is a banger with the classic combination of feminine vocals matched with some good rapping over a nice instrumental. “Flawless” is alright, not much to say about that. “Stupid Skit” is ok but it does nothing at pushing forward the aesthetic of “Bobby Tarantino” and honestly comes weird the more you listen to it. “Theme of the People” is an amazing song that I think captures the slow flow that Logic is trying to find in the first half of this project. The beat is fire, the man is spitting, and the message is clear. “God Might Judge” is definitely a track influenced by early Kanye West and I think this track is fine, but I think it would have been better had he not worn Kanye’s influence that obvious on his sleeve. If there was a track to add the experimentation that we’re seeing in the previous tracks, it would have been nice to see it here. At the end of the song, it just made me want to listen to Kanye, not Logic. “See You Space Cowboy…” is a very nice song with an energetic Logic battling a sassy beat. The sound is a hard-hitter and Logic definitely did a great job at matching the vibe. Finally, “untitled” is another great song that takes it a bit mellow and has a confident Logic riding the beat like a surfboard on a wave. He sounds like he’s in his element with this song, and it makes me wonder why this project had such a huge gap between the songs that allowed Logic to show off his skillset and those that shined on his weaknesses. It’s almost like we’re having different versions of the same dude switching out at track 6.

Logic mentions somewhere in this tape that he’s planning on making another album that will end his deal with Def Jam. While I am excited for that album, I do hope he finds his way on how he wants to go about his rap career and everything around it. This project could have gone so bad, but fortunately there are some songs towards the end that saves him. I hope you guys enjoyed reading this and I’ll catch you later!
