My Thoughts on Flexing Retirement
What’s up guys! Hope everyone had a
great weekend! I sure did, decided to drive up a couple hours to visit some
friends and it was a great experience. I did however, want talk about something
I noticed shortly before I left for my trip which was the release of music by
the rapper Logic after saying he retired… for the second time. For those that
don’t know, Logic has been one of my favorite rappers of all time, but recently
his quality of music and his show of character in recent events have made me a
little agitated as a fan. I was a huge fan of his music, and when he first
announced retiring after the “Everybody” album, I was devastated. I remember high
school me looking up all the forums and discussion that went over this
retirement and whether or not it was true. I remember feeling so down to where I
relistened to all of his projects thus far knowing it was going to be over.
Then, he said he wasn’t actually retiring, and it was completely a joke. I was
so frustrated because it was so stressful having my favorite artist announce
something so huge and then going back on it. However, it was Logic, so I decided
to just ignore it and keep going. Fast forward to 2020, he announces retirement
again with his new project “No Pressure”. This time it seemed serious since he
recently became a father and said he wanted to dedicate his life to his family.
This time I thought he was super serious, and again I felt like I was losing a
favorite artist. Fast forward to now, he recently released a single on music
platforms with the cover art being a letter from the RATT Pack music label saying,
“I’m back”. This left a bad flavor because to me, it seems like Logic is marketing
his OWN retirement for more views and attention. And it’s super weird because a
lot of his recent music has been about being true to yourself and being the
best, you can be. This whole act seems super fake because the last two times he
did it, I took it seriously. Now he seems to be bouncing on and off the fence
of whether or not he wants to do music, and at this point I don’t really care.
This isn’t a cool flex or a good marketing idea, it’s just extra for no reason.
And honestly, if one of my artists can’t make up their mind on whether they
wanna take music seriously, why should I. I know this is like a rant of some
sort, but I sincerely hope he doesn’t encourage other big artists to just use
the concept of retirement and not making music for the sake of attention or
making a statement of how bored you are in life.
